Everyone makes an impact on this world influencing the environment for generations to come; it is a responsibility no one can avoid. Scientific and environmental literacy are essential in protecting health of humans and wildlife now, and in the future. Citizen science educates, forms communities, and empowers the public while supporting scientific data collection. In this presentation, Dr. Tracy Fanara will describe what makes a citizen science program successful and what lessons she learned along the way while using citizen science to protect the public from blooms of the harmful species of algae commonly called Florida red tide, wreaking havoc on wildlife, tourism, economics, and public health.
