Breakout Session B: The Role of Evaluation for Designing Out of School (Informal) STEM Learning Programs

While many K-12 educators may incorporate field trips to various out of school learning institutions, these trips may be seen as something “fun” or a “break” rather than a way to further enhance and solidify STEM concepts for students. This session will provide various examples of STEM learning programs at informal learning institutions (i.e. museums- zoos, botanic gardens, nature centers, etc.) and demonstrate how those programs are evaluated. The discussion will then focus on how the evaluation is used to further refine programs to better match various academic standards (e.g. NGSS or state standards) as well as Social and Emotional Learning goals. Finally, participants will be encouraged to brainstorm about local informal learning institutions that may serve as resources for them to enhance their STEM learning programs. The discussion will also focus on ways that these museum-educator-scientist partnerships can lead to the development of mutually beneficial programs, further creating a connected STEM learning ecosystem, rather than isolated STEM silos of formal vs. informal programs.
